Structure of the Atmosphere

Layers of the Atmosphere

The Earth’s atmosphere is divided up into different layers.

Troposphere
Temperature decreases as height increases
Almost all of our weather is within the Troposphere
Tropopause
Temperature remains constant
Stratosphere
Temperature increases as height increases
The Troposphere extends up to an average height of about 36,000ft

Composition of the Atmosphere

Earth’s atmosphere consists of:

78% Nitrogen
21% Oxygen
1% Other Gases

These proportions remain constant as altitude changes
